The Pawhuska Huskies have hired a boys basketball coach to replace Jake Christenson, who was let go by the school board in May.
Talby Justus, who had served as the Associate Head Coach of the Texas Arlington women's basketball team for the past seven years, was hired at a special called school board meeting last Friday. Justus helped lead the Lady Mavericks to a 21-11 record this past season and steered Texas Arlington to its first regular season championship while playing in the Sun Belt in 2018-2019. Justus went to Pawnee High School and played basketball for his father, Harley, who has coached for more than 35 years in the Oklahoma area. Upon graduation, he went to play college basketball at Northern Oklahoma College before transferring to Tabor College, where he was named a KCAC all-conference player and made a Final Four appearance in the NAIA Tournament in 1997. This coaching change came as a surprise to some, including Chistenson. In an interview we conducted last week, Christenson stressed that even though he had been let go by the board, he would still be there for all of his players. Justus takes over a team that won the area championship a year ago and was a game away from advancing to the Class 2A state tournament. (Photo Courtesy of utamavs.com.) Comments are closed.
