Area schools are continuing to offer free breakfast and lunch to students even though school buildings remain closed through the end of the academic year. In Pawhuska, students have the ability to pick the meals up at the school or there are several drop-off locations throughout town. Superintendent David Cash said the process is going very well.
This is something the school had added through the backpack program, but Cash was glad to be able to keep it going during this time of uncertainty. For more information on the Pawhuska meal service program, you may go to the Pawhuska Public Schools Facebook Page. As of Thursday afternoon, there had been 68 positive COVID-19 cases reported and eight confirmed deaths coming from of Osage County. Half of the people who have gotten the virus have recovered. When reporting on this story a week ago, there were 61 positive cases with the same number of deaths. This is why Osage County Emergency Manager Jerry Roberts believes the county is beginning to get a handle on things.
Roberts commends the people of Osage County for abiding by the governor's safer at home order during this difficult time. He believes that is one of the reasons the curve has flattened across the county. Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt layed out a three-phase plan on Wednesday to begin re-opening the state. The Osage County Housing Authority has opted to close all public storm shelters across the county because of the coronavirus. Residents haven't yet had a reason to seek shelter this year, but this closure is something that Emergency Manager Jerry Roberts is strongly against.
As of Wednesday afternoon, all roads were open across the county and there were no power outages to report. Roberts also wanted to remind everyone how dangerous it is to drive into high waters. School buildings across the state have been closed for a month now, forcing students to use distant learning programs online. Pawhuska Superintendent David Cash says students miss the interactions with their classmates, but they are taking to the new ways of learning.
Cash adds that this way of learning gives his teachers a chance to become closer with their students as well. Cash says there are still some students struggling with internet access, but the school is doing what they can to provide for the families. Cash says the issue is there is a nationwide shortage of hotspots because so many families are buying them. When the candidate filings closed across Osage County, District Two Commissioner Kevin Paslay was a name that was left off the list.
Paslay, who had said he was looking forward to running for re-election at an earlier Board of Osage County Commissioner meeting, cited on Tuesday that he felt like it wasn’t the best time to run for another term. Paslay is looking forward to getting his district through this COVID-19 outbreak and doing the best he can for the county. Paslay, a republican, has served as district two commissioner since 2017. Joe Williams and Scott Hilton, both democrats, will be running against Tom Teel and Steve Talburt, two republicans. Hilton served as district two commissioner for 20 years before Paslay defeated Hilton in 2016. |
